Question Solaris on AMD Duron?

Greetings!

Is it possible to install Solaris 8 i86 version on an AMD Duron 1.3 G machine? Although, Solaris 8 i86 is for INTEL only..I want to make sure before I buy the right PC.

Thank You.

Hi,

solaris is running fine on my athlon xp 2000+ ... as far as i know, a duron is an athlon with less cache and so on. so it should work fine (the specification INTEL is just used in the case of "32-bit PC processor" and doesn't mean that it just runs on intel machines)

Yeah, the ix86 (where the x is usually between 3 and 6, so i386 to i686) just denotes the 'type' of Intel processor. All Intel compatible processors (PC processors, for want of a better way of putting it) have at least the same instructions as the 386 processors. The newer processors have more instructions. If something is written for the 386 processors, then it'll work on anything above that. AMD processors are all part and parcel of this - except the new AMD64 processors, but we're not talking about them.

So, yes.

Worked fine for me with Solaris 8... problem was I had no GFX cause my card wasn't fully supported. Downloading solaris 9 now, which fixes that ...
