Solaris Course : question about linux.

Hi.
I am going to with a bit of luck join a 3 months Summer Solaris course. I would like to know how comparable Solaris (10) is to modern day Linux systems. I will take the course regardless but it would b e fun in advance to know how much of what I learn in the _Unix_ course I will be able to use with Linux.
Cheers

As with any Unix flavour, the principle is the same ... The main changes you will find are differences in commands for particular things like 'format' in solaris shows all disks and presents you with a menu driven text based GUI. Linux on the other hand, you will use fdisk. With fdisk you need to include the device and possible options/flags for example 'fdisk -l /dev/hda'. I use both Solaris and Linux on a day-to-day basis and find it simple switching across to the other. Another difference in all flavours of Unix is the location of some config files.

My mind goes blank on the rest. In my company everyone seems to get on just fine with the basic principles and sys admin stuff, however if you want to go deeper into a particular flavour it's always best to go on the course suited, at least I find it is anyway.

Summary - Go for it, enjoy the course and when you are done experiment - try out a few different flavours, try Solaris HP-UX AIX experience helps!

Hope this helps

You'd be suprised. In order to maintain compatibility (both with people and software) most Linux systems are near direct replicas of UNIX systems (Slack in particular - the most UNIX-Like Linux available).

In fact, most FOSS software will not indicate an OS, but instead just say "Any POSIX-compatible system"

Guess if I do join the course (applying very late: it started June 13th) I will end up using Slackware after the course ends :P Thx for explinations. This truely will help me learn how to use Unix/Linux atleast on the basics level. Will help me move away from Windows and maybe save me from having to purchase Debian 3.1 Bible and get cash from the CSN("goverment) for studying :).
