Solaris 9 x86 12/02 (U2) upgrade to (U7)

I am currently working with a robust Solaris 9 x86 12/02 (U2).
The new JDS2 is stated to work with Solaris 9 x86 (U7).
Is there a way to upgrade the this older, very stable version to the new version to use JDS2?
I have tried to use the install and DCA diskette to get a good setup of the new 9 x86, but each time it fails.
I was thinking if I could get the solid 12/02 build loaded and then just patch or update my way up to the U7 version. ( I have not seen it referred to as other than U7.)
Suggestions please.

jlliagre 01-12-2006 02:57 PM

Sorry I've no experience with JDS on Solaris 9.

That said every Solaris 9 build/update is rock solid, and Solaris 10 is just even more, so I still encourage you to upgrade to the last Solaris 10 release 01/06), with which all that problematic x86 DCA stuff has been removed.

Solaris guarantee upward compatibility, so the risk is pretty low your scripts fail on Solaris 10, but of course you need to validate that on some kind of test/staging platform, being in a production environment.

Yes sir, I will take your advice.
I will post with results of the load.
Thank You for opinion an guidance.

Armor 01-14-2006 03:21 PM

I have been able to successfully load the Sun Solaris 10 x86.
I used the Solaris Interactive installation.
The only error I experience is that the very end.
I get the boot loader and select the active Solaris 10 x86 partition and it re-launches back into a setup for installation.
I have tried two custom installs for making various slice sizes on my own (like I would for a SPARC install).
I have tried two default installs.
All have gone back to this attempt to re-install the system. I have no DCA boot diskette attached and I after the last screen that calls for a "reboot" I remove the the cd as instructed.
Suggestions please.
Thank You.

If you are using regular CDs:
--
Did you install the software from all the disks (4 or 5 disks)?

Quick note #1:
Once the installation from CD #1 is complete, system boots up from the hard disk; and it may appear that it is not going to ask for CD #2. We just have to be patient, and wait for it to ask us for CD #2.

If you are using a DVD:
--
It is very likely that you might have selected some software (essentialy freeware) to install as part of the custom installation. Sun offers this freeware as a companion CD, that you can download the image from: http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/...10download.xml. Perhaps the installer is looking for this companion CD. If that's the case, it is as simply as downloading the companion CD image and letting the installer move forward is the way to go.

Quick Note #2:
If the companion CD image is on the hard disk, you need not burn it into a CD; but can be mounted on a loopback file device with the help of lofiadm tool. This can be done while the installer is waiting for the CD or path to the setup file {in companion CD} on local/remote disk. Instructions of this web page may help you mount the image on loopback device:

Thank You.
Here is the status thus far:
• I re-burned the “.iso” files to new disks. This finally allowed the start-up and interactive installation to actually follow the documents from SUN on Basic Installation of the SUN Solaris 10 x86 Operating System. For whatever reason, the "Companion CD" for 10 x86 would not install was skipped. ( I will go back in further post work and review the CD to see if it a readable error or what.)

• The video "drivers" that came with the installation would not configure after all 4 disks were loaded. I tried various drivers for the ATI Mobility card that came installed in this Dell Inspiron 4000. (It is listed on the HCL as being compatible with this OS.) I tried the Xig Summit drivers I had for the 9 x86 version. They failed. I went to the Xig Summit site and downloaded the compliant drivers for 10 x86 and the Dell latop. They work. There is a fee for them, but well worth it. I like the fact I got to try them to make sure they worked before purchasing them.

• jlliagre wote to me "That said every Solaris 9 build/update is rock solid, and Solaris 10 is just even more, so I still encourage you to upgrade to the last Solaris 10 release 01/06), with which all that problematic x86 DCA stuff has been removed.

Solaris guarantee upward compatibility, so the risk is pretty low your scripts fail on Solaris 10, but of course you need to validate that on some kind of test/staging platform, being in a production environment."

• This was gospel. The errors were meida driven for the most part. I switched from TDK media to Memorex and the problems went away, for the most part, in the installation. The video drivers... irratating; but, surmountable.

• For whatever reason now, I cannot get the system to ceoonect tothe internet. I have secure shelled over to a Soalris 9 SPARC Sun Unltra 60... no problem. I have made SMBmount connections to a Windows 2000 Server... no problem. Connect to the internet... nothing.

I have looked at:
/etc/defaultrouter; /etc/hosts; /etc/hostname.xxxx; /etc/nsswitch.conf & .dns; /etc/resolv.conf; /etc/netmasks.
I am running a hub and router between me and the cable modem. I am using the 192.168.1.x assocaited with the 2nd version for the Linksys router family. I touch all in the internal, but not the net.

Suggestions Welcome... and thank you jlliagre Senior Member, Merci.

Have you tested both Xorg and Xsun for your X11 driver issue ?

Quote:

I have looked at:

Double check, or post these files and "netstat -rn" output.

Armor 01-16-2006 09:45 AM

I was able to log-on and get on the net this morning. I am not sure why. I would go into it in more depth, but I have a new demon.

The system kicks me out after several minutes like there is a display saver setting running. I get sent back out to the log-in banner and have to start over.

I am trying to research the "power savings" settings and "screen saver" settings.

Here is the "netstat -rn":
Routing Table: IPv4
Destination Gateway Flags Ref Use Interface
-------------------- -------------------- ----- ----- ------ ---------
192.168.1.0 192.168.1.143 U 1 2 iprb0
224.0.0.0 192.168.1.143 U 1 0 iprb0
default 192.168.1.1 UG 1 9
127.0.0.1 127.0.0.1 UH 4 95 lo0

I will take this up again on the Windows box. I am not sure what the time interval between resets are.

Thank You.

jlliagre 01-16-2006 11:49 AM

Is this happening with both JDS and CDE ?

Armor 01-16-2006 05:29 PM

So far just the JDS. Since, I was using the Fedora Core 4 w/ GNOME for so long, I tend to gravitate to the JDS for everyday work. I use the CDE to work at development items that I need for my job.
I will use the CDE for awhile and find out.
Do you still want to see the "etc" files or just go with the "luck"? Your call.
I am going to keep trying to find out about the screen resets.
Thank You.

Armor 01-16-2006 06:05 PM

To answer your question "yes". It just happened to me while I was doing an "append" to a flat text file of all the "etc" files you wanted to look at. I am on the CDE side and as I was going from one work space to the other; I touched the mouse and was sent back to the log-in banner. I was not idle, I was typing and using the mouse. hmmm...

On the "Application Manager - Desk Top Controls" the "Window Style Manager" is set for 15 minutes before launching a screen saver. "Power Management" is "on". I still should not get a "screen saver" if I am typing or moving the mouse.

On a re-boot, I went into the BIOS and disabled the "Power Management" settings for when the system is connected to A/C power. Currently, only battery operations has any say in the power settings and management.

Suggestions?
Thank You.

jlliagre 01-18-2006 03:29 AM

What about the X server logs ?
Mine are going to /var/log/Xorg.0.log, your mileage may vary.

Armor 01-18-2006 05:17 PM

Sir, (I hope you are a sir.)

I was able to dot a "cat" on the "/var/log/Xorg.0.log" and th "Xsun.0.log" and did a redirect (>) to a text file in my "Documents" folder. Since, I was working in the JDS desktop, I did an SMB mount through the application "Network Places". This I did a "drag and drop" to move the files to a share on my Window Server.

Output /var/log/Xorg.0.log: (This is a long output. Part 1)
