I'm wondering if anyone here is has carried out an upgrade from Solaris 9 to Solaris 10/Express in place, as opposed to reinstalling.

I have quite a few bits of software installed on my Sun Blade 2000, currently running Solaris 9. I'd like to upgrade to Solaris 10 at some point, or perhaps the current Solaris Express release when I come to perform the upgrade, but I don't want to have to reinstall everything.

I have a mixture of software installed from SunFreeware and also compiled from source. This includes things like PostreSQL, Python, Subversion etc. that I'd really like to keep as they are.

Is this possible? I assume that if I keep the same version of GCC and libc I should be ok with the software I have compiled?

This is certainly doable, the installer give you the option to upgrade if it finds a an upgradeable version. As usual, make sure you have an up to date and full backup of your data including for other partitions as a mistake can be disastrous ....

Under certain conditions, you can also upgrade a system while keeping the previous version, and switch between the previous and the last one at reboot (it is too late for your current Solaris 9 release, but it may be useful for you if you plan to do frequent upgrades).

By the way, I almost never do regular or live upgrades, I usually just reinstall everything, and have all my data on separate disks or partitions.
