Solaris 8 or solaris 10?
Hi,
Im currently running Solaris 10 on my Sun Ultra 5. Im primary using it for common desktop tasks, wordprocessing, browsing the net etc.
Now I know that the ultra 5 comes with sol 8 preinstalled so I was thinking perhaps it would run 'lighter' if I used sol 8 instead?
Is Sol 10 much 'heavier' to run than sol 8?
Will I experience better speeds if I use sol 8 instead?
And finally: Where can I find Staroffice 7 so I can install it, if I pick sol 8? (Staroffice 7 comes with solaris 10 OS, but I dont know if its included with Sol 8)

Solaris 10 is not particularly heavier than Solaris 8, the most important factor being the graphic environment.
If you stay with CDE with Solaris 10 on your U5, I believe you'll have the same level of performance than Solaris 8, and even probably better in several areas.
If you use JDS (Gnome based), the overhead will be very noticeable.
StarOffice 7 wasn't available for free, nor was bundled with Solaris 8.
Another advantage of Solaris 10 is the hardware support. If you raid through the Solaris HCL you'll find a lot of things that are only supported in Solaris 10.
