The official Sun Solaris 8 page dosen't show a download link for that version, but recommends version 10. But, version 9 still has a download link.

http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/9/

The newer releases of Solaris and OpenSolaris have more support for x86 hardware. You might be better off getting a newer Solaris version unless you know your x86 hardware is supported under version 8 or 9.

I wanted Solaris 8 because the computer I want to install it on has only 128MB of RAM and a small HDD(10GB)

You're right, I think I'll try Solaris 9 then.

Cheers.

I suggest you try the Sun Device Detection Tool to see what possible problems you may have with your x86 hardware. Usually, the network cards are the biggest issue. The detection tool will show what devices are detected as well as the ones that require a 3rd party driver download and install.

Yes, I tried it, but unfortunately it's only for Solaris 10 and Express edition, not for Solaris 9, and I can't install these versions due to their large size and RAM requirements.

Oh, too bad. I know your asking about Solaris, but with an older system with limited resources you might consider an alternate *nix. I've had good luck with OpenBSD and Slackware on older systems with small amounts of RAM. Just a suggestion.

You may want to try MilaX (dubbed Damn Small OpenSolaris) http://www.milax.org/

It may be able to boot on your h/w.
