Solaris 11 & Spyware
 

Hi All,

I'm going to install Solaris Express - when there's time. But anyway, is Solaris immune to spyware? Or is that something that has to do with Windows because it's usually a .exe file? Or is it web page malware? Thanks.

I think with any unix based system you are pretty safe from malware. The only thing you have to worry about is any type of social engineering such as those e-mail scams.

Keep your system up to date, and use common sence and you will be fine.

To Guitarist88, SqdnGuns, Kahless, Thanks that's what I wanted to hear. I try to use commonsense and avoid those email scams. Keeping my system up to date will be difficult, since I'm new to Solaris - unless Solaris has an auto update feature like Windows. While it's nice to have the security alerts, a quick look at them tells me it must take a lot of time to keep a system up to date as far as security. I guess the days of just using the computer to get some work done are over. I know I spend way more time than I want to just keeping a few Windows computers secured. Thanks again guys.

Pca is a quite popular tool to automatically apply required patches: http://www.par.univie.ac.at/solaris/pca/intro.html

Note that Solaris 11 (or whatever its future name) isn't out yet so there are no patches for it.

i wouldn't lose any sleep over such things.

i did notice that my solaris update manager crashes on my latest install though,

I have seen nothing but very positive reports about the third party open source pca tool.

Not keeping a production system or an Internet facing server up to date with security patches is quite risky.

oh true, i was assuming the OP was just a normal user on broadband.

i personally have never had problems as a home user.

Hey Thanks, I remember seeing an old Solaris patch updating script years ago, but at the time, since I couldn't even get it installed and configured, I wasn't interested.
