Downloaded sol-11_4-vbox.ova and installed in VBox. https://cloudmarketplace.oracle.com/...sting/61750333
It seems to be working fine. I wonder if I can change the desktop to Xfce? I don't see how to Add/Remove software. Haven't been able to find a basic user manual. Lots of conflicting data on the web. Not even sure if it is free. Just trying to learn at this point.

There is a link that says, "Oracle Solaris Documentation" on the link you provided. Clicking that brings up the support page, with another very-obvious link saying "Oracle Solaris 11.4 Information Library", that has EVERYTHING about Solaris 11.4.
I read those pages, but still don't have a clue. I don't see anything like Synaptic, and apt-get install xfce4 doesn't work. The manuals don't tell you anything useful. Nowhere does it say "If you want to compile something open a terminal and type or cut and paste "blah, blah, blah," I'm sure someone who has been using Solaris for many years could understand the manual, but if it was written to help someone like me it failed.

Oracle Support Hotline:1.800.223.1711 maybe?
As TB0ne said, the "basic user manual" is available on the link you posted, as is licensing information, but a phone call might be simplest.
The download for xfce probably contains a README file or some other documentation about compiling the software.

Doesn't seem like you read it; there is an entire section on how to install packages under the "Updating Systems and Adding Software" heading, obviously enough. The "pkg install" command is well documented and it has man pages just like Linux does. And "apt-get" won't work on Fedora or openSUSE, anymore than yum will work on Ubuntu, or zypper will work on Red Hat. Different systems=different tools.

Because there is NO documentation for Linux or anything else that covers that. Because pretty much every source package has different installation instructions and requirements, that are NOT a function of the operating system. That is why you will need to read the installation instructions for whatever package you want to build from source. Did you read the XFCE page? https://docs.xfce.org/xfce/building
There are also numerous websites with pre-built Solaris packages (although XFCE isn't one of them), that cover all the dependencies listed for XFCE. Gnome is one of the desktop choices for Solaris, and is (again) covered in the user manual.
