Solaris 10 x86 issues

I've decided to tinker a lot more with Solaris. I have installed in on my Athlon XP 2000 based system and everything went fine (I've installed it before as a test so knew what I was doing). What I would like to know, is how I can upgrade/patch packages on my system as well as perform other package management tasks. I would also like to know how I can configure my Creative SB Live 5.1 soundcard. I have done numerous google searches, but the results I get are not really helpful. What books and articles would you recommend for someone completely new to Solaris.

Thanks. :)

pkginfo gives you the information about your packages. pkgadd, pkgrm and pkgchk allow you to add, remove and check your packages respectively.

You can use updatemanager to update your system automatically. smpatch, and patchadd allow you to do it manually. I prefer the latter method, using patchadd.

Cannot tell you anything about the soundcard, sorry.

Maidros

Thanks for your tips, they are much appreciated. Jlliagre has been very helpful with setting up the soundcard.

I am currently working with a robust Solaris 9 x86 12/02 (U2).
The new JDS2 is stated to work with Solaris 9 x86 (U7).
Is there a way to upgrade the this older, very stable version to the new version to use JDS2?
I have tried to use the install and DCA diskette to get a good setup of the new 9 x86, but each time it fails.
I was thinking if I could get the solid 12/02 build loaded and then just patch or update my way up to the U7 version. ( I have not seen it referred to as other than U7.)
Suggestions please.

First, why aren't you starting a new thread, your question doesn't match the "Solaris 10 x86 issues" title.

Second, why aren't you upgrading to Solaris 10 ?

Because the systems I maintain at work are SPARC 9 systems. I just want to make sure the scripts I write are compliant with the systems I work on.
I want to make sure the commands and such have not been changed due improvements and the scripts will no cause issues. Safety.
I originally tried to load the new 9 x86 U7, but it would not take, even the system I am using being certified in the HCL.

Pardon me also for not starting a new thread. I did not I was allowed to do that.
I don't like to make issues for any one trying to assist me.
I will do that.
Merci

I have been spending a lot of time with Solaris and I am beginning to feel quite comfortable using it. Everything is more or less setup the way that I want but there are a couple of issues that I need some pointers. I have had problems configuring my local USB printer (HP Photosmart 7660) so I would like to know if Solaris ships with CUPS or whether I would have to add it on my own i.e. compile from source.

The other issue is regarding GDM. I have enabled GDM to be the login manager instead of dtlogin. The problem is that whenever I try to shutdown or reboot the system (I enabled the options to shutdown and reboot), the action I have chosen is not done and gdm just restarts. Any clues on how I can resolve this little problem. Cheers.

Sun ships it with Solaris software companion CD. If you are running Solaris 10, you can download it from: http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/...10download.xml. Otherwise search in Sun web site, for similar companion CD for Solaris 8 or 9.

You can also download this package from sunfreeware.com, blastwave.org web sites.

How did you enable shutdown/reboot options? Did you check /var/adm/messages file, or the output of "dmesg" for some clues?

Thanks for the pointers. I am using Solaris Express (Nevada build 33) at the moment. I have found the cups packages so I will install them later. As for GDM I enabled the shutdown/reboot options by uncommenting the lines below in /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf.
Code:

RebootCommand=/sbin/init 6
HaltCommand=/sbin/init 5

So GDM shows the options, but doesn't actually perform them. I wonder whether the commands are right or if I should enable shutting down and rebooting in some other config file as well.

EDIT: I have installed CUPS and printing works fine. I have looked at the GDM logs and there is nothing to indicate why it won't shutdown or reboot (the logs basically have the same message whether I try to use the shutdown options or not).

The commands are right. This should work ...
You can enable gdm debugging logs to syslog ([debug] ... Enable=true) to investigate.

Ok, I will try that.

Solaris 10 x86 issue: Cannot move "mapping-root" socket

I am currently working on a Sun V40z 10 x86 system. I have a requirement to "mv /var/tmp/* /tmp". In the "/var/tmp" directory there is a socket called "mapping-root".

In attempting to move it, I get an error message: "mv: mapping-root: unknown file type 0xc000.

Question: Can I move this? If so, what does it take?

Thank You

First, this question is unrelated to the thread, next time open a new one.

This requirement is foolish.

Is this socket in use by something ?
