Solaris 10 Problems and First Impression

After a disasterous time attempting to install the Express Community Edition. I have temporarily went back to Solaris 10.

First impressions are not favourable. It is so sssslllooowww. Comparing Slackware 12.1 with Solaris 10 is like comparing a Jet Fighter to a Tiger Moth. Firefox rendering this page seemed to take an eternity. Maybe with tweeking we can make it run faster.

Okay, with the help of the select few who participate in this forum, I have managed to get my network up and running with the aid of a third party driver. Thanks for that.

I have also updated my system and registered Solaris.

The Hardware detection tool advised me that although there were drivers for my sound card in both opensolaris and the express edition, there was no driver for my sound card on Solaris 10. Okay, so I downloaded the opensound driver for Solaris. It installed successfully and #osstest at the command prompt produced the desired output.

On reboot, I noticed the speaker symbol in the bottom panel was still greyed out with an arrow through it. I opened the volume control and this seemed to sort that problem out but it was still greyed out. Okay lets try and play a cd. I put a cd in the drive. After a while the cdplayer opened but didnot play the cd.

No idea where the cd is mounted? Trying to open the tray manually doesnot work! Any ideas.

There must be something wrong with your configuration. Are you using the same Firefox version ? With the same X11 driver ? Is your system low on memory ?

"df -k" should show you where the CD is mounted.
You eject a CD with the "eject" command or by using the GUI.

Going to give up on Solaris for the time being. Will periodically check hardware compatibility tool to see if they eventually include my hardware with the next installations. Pity I had such difficulty with the Express Community Edition installation. Solaris system seems to think I have two processors on my machine, or multi-core.
