Sendmail problem after solaris 10 patch cluster

So the other night I installed the solaris 10 patch cluster from December on a V490, reconfigured my sendmail.cf file like I always have to after a patch cluster and I can't seem to get mail out of the box. I do have a mail relay I have to go through so I can't hit the outside world directly. If I telnet to my mailrelay on port 25 and compose an email that way it works. I used snoop to watch port 25 and it looks like sendmail is attempting to go to the destination mail server directly instead of using the mail relay and is blocked by firewall. Another V490 I patched at the same time doesn't have the issue and mail works fine after I modified the sendmail.cf.

I created a .mc file with all my options I change (both of them) and compiled like the first section of this doc http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/816...+configuration Step 6 where you test the new configuration works but when I copy my new config into place sendmail still doesn't work.

I'm running Version 8.13.8+Sun of sendmail.

What's funny is every now and then a message gets out of the server then it stops working again for a while.

Any ideas out there?

other info just in case
my options I modify/add in sendmail.cf are
DSsmtp:mailrelay.mycompany.com
and lower down
O DaemonPortOptions=Name=NoMTA4, Family=inet, Addr=127.0.0.1

I also have the following set in /etc/default/sendmail
MODE="-bd"
QUEUEINTERVAL="15m"

Made some progress today, it appears that sendmail is running with a -C option pointing to a different config file

root 10119 10118 0 09:20:33 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q15m -C /etc/mail/local.cf
smmsp 10116 1 0 09:20:33 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/sendmail -Ac -q15m
root 10118 1 0 09:20:33 ? 0:00 /usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q15m -C /etc/mail/local.cf

if I disable sendmail and then relaunch via /usr/lib/sendmail -bd -q15m it works and sends all the mail through my relay.

Anyone know why sendmail is starting up with the -C /etc/mail/local.cf option? And how to get rid of it starting that way?
