Root Password & Uses of .conf files

1. If I have forgotten root password of a remote solaris box. How can I recover or reset the root password ?

2. What are the .conf files found in the /etc that belongs to Solaris and not to another other application ? and what are their uses ?

To recover the password, look for a postit behind the keyboard, but it's not guaranteed ... ;)

You can't reset the password as long as the machine stay remote, unless a network security hole exists, which shouldn't happen ...

All .conf files in /etc belong to Solaris, except those on /etc/opt.
