Problems with Solaris release 8/07 on my laptop
Hi guys,
Ok, everything went OK till the Solaris 10 8/07 CD-1 finished installing its software. Then, right down at the bottom, as soon before REBOOT, in the Solaris Installation Console (the small console right below) had an error message something like this:
io.jave.exe NOT ENOUGH SPACE...Then the system reboots and then all I get is MYHOSTNAME CONSOLE LOGIN and it does not boot into the CDE desktop for some reason.
I selected Solaris Interactive DEFAULT.
on which I achieved
My system partitions specs are below.
Windows: C Drive
40GB
Windows: E: Drive LOGICAL
65GB
And on the remaining UNALLOCATED PARTITION I had 45GB left... In other words, without using any partitioning software I just installed Solaris on that UNALLOCATED SPACE which Windows had.
Everything went great as far the GRUB displaying the menu selection which I had wished for WITHOUT using any 3rd party software like System Commander. That part of the install went smoothly.
Now...why does it not boot onto the CDE Desktop after the reboot??? It just hangs on CONSOLE LOGIN...
However, Before that problem, I had error messages of the one below:
UNQUALIFIED HOSTNAME DOES NOT EXIST (SENDMAIL): SLEEPING FOR RETRY
Then after that, I had disabled Sendmail (SCVADM DISABLE SENDMAIL) then I rebooted and it just hangs on CONSOLE LOGIN.
I had removed the installation completely now until someone helps me to figures out this mess...
By the way...if theres enough space, then how can I edit the partitions during the insallation??? It just has BACK, INSTALL NOW, OR CANCEL buttons...But I dont see any EDITING on the partition confirmation window...
Whoever is experienced in this release version of Solaris 10, then please help.

Yes 2GB of RAM is large enough and so is 45 GB of disk space.
As you uninstalled everything, it's hard to diagnose what was wrong with your installation.

Ok, what about this...
What if I reinstall it again????
But then, I need to know before hand the SYSTEM ERROR LOG COMMANDS SO I can post them on here using Windows...Because I will not have an Internet connection under the LOGIN CONSOLE anyways...
Would that sound good to you???
Just please post any commands that will need to be posted on this thread to diagnose the issue....
There must a be command to check all the installation error logs even without the CDE Desktop booting..

Can anyone please post the console commands so I can check or post the installation errors so it can be diagnosed on why it wont boot into the CDE Desktop?

Why ? Solaris Express can do everything Solaris 10 does plus it contains bug fixes and new features.

Ok, this may be very stupid...But I would prefer just using Solaris 10 because its used by most corporations.
Sorry to be so stubborn, but Its just me..
I will post that command later when I have access to my laptop.

Up to you, but I guess you aren't in the same position as these corporations which have a paying support contract and can get patches should they suffer a problem.

We can expect 99.9% of what is in OpenSolaris/Solaris Express including security enhancements to be eventually integrated in the next commercial Solaris release. OpenSolaris isn't a fork or a different branch.

It works...
he problem was the not enough space. I selected CUSTOM INSTALL to edit the partition table...as I could not do it under default install..
jlliagre,
Thanks for being a huge help even though I am "pest" and I am sorry for it. But I think its a good sign that I want to learn UNIX, but most of the time I tend to fall off the loop...
