Path

is there a way to set the path, and keep it fixed as what you set it, cos every now and then, the terminal stops me doing what i want, and certain things dont work until you set the path again, so if there is a way to set the path, and make it permanent, i would be very interested to know

its probably just something im doing wrong when i set the path, but any help would be appreciated.

also i would be interested to know if there are certain things which must be in the path to ensure the correct function of the system.

thanks

If you want to persistently set the PATH for your account, do it in your ".profile" file, if you want to do it for every user, then /etc/profile is the place to do it.
