I have added a 2nd network card and would like to find out how to configure it (solaris 8 for intel).
Using ifconfig -a it does not appear to be showing, I installed a network card onto a slackware machine and used netconfig to set up the card and IP address, is there something similar on Solaris ?
I have looked up a tutorial on the net and did as it said but the card still does not show up if I type ifconfig -a
I have checked that the NIC is listed in /etc/driver_alises
then I did:
ifconfig elxl1 plumb
ifconfig elxl1 192.168.200.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 broadcast 255.255.255.255
ifconfig elxl1 up
devfsadn
touch / reconfigure
then a reboot
For starters, "touch /reconfigure"- no space between the / and reconfigure, then reboot. The other command is devfsadm with an M. Are you sure it's going to be an elxl1 card? What type of card is it?
Install method:
a. Power-off your PC and insert your network adapter.
b. Boot-up you Solaris/x86 and login as "root".
c. Copy the "Driver software " into the temporary location in your hard-drive.
d. UNZIP the "Driver software " and you may get elxl0 or 1 as interface.
d. Run the "Install" from File Manager to install the driver, and
it will modify 2 files, "/etc/name_to_major" "/etc/driver_aliases" ( Check for the entry)
e. You need to create the "/etc/hostname.elxl0 or 1" file and modify other related files to make your networking environments working well.
f. You can execute "touch /reconfigure" then "shutdown -i5 -g0", so that
Solaris will reboot and scan changed hardware environment.
g. You can execute "ifconfig -a" to make sure "elxl 0or1" driver is up.
The network card I have is just an old one that is laying around and does not have any 'driver software', were would I be able to get he software from ?
The necessary drivers for elx and elxl NICs are already included in the OS. Once you have the NIC installed, you can use the plumb option with ifconfig to bring the NIC up. Create another hostname file for the new NIC and it should be ok at boot times.
