That means your NIC isn't recognized by default.

What says the device driver utility about it ? (Applications > System Tools > Device Driver Utility)

i just clicked on device driver utility and i have Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11B/G WLAN and BCM4401-80 100BASE-TX missing third party.
i have got an apple minimac so is there anyway i can download these drivers to a cd in osx operating system and then install them onto my laptop?

There are no open source drivers for the wireless card and Broadcom doesn't provides Solaris drivers. The way to use it is to install NDIS which allows using Windows drivers.

The Ethernet card is supported by a third party driver, bfe, that is available here:
