Thank you for your help, but I think I've had it with Solaris on the x86 PC and will blow it away in favor of a Linux distribution. I'll continue to learn Solaris on my UltraSPARC 1000 system at work, but trying to make everything work on this PC is pointless.

You may want to try Solaris Express or opensolaris 2008.05 instead. Much more is done automatically with these distributions.
