mysql not running

hi guys
i have solaris 10 running on a sparc server
i have installed mysql 5 and trying to put a root password
but when i run the command:
/usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'password'

i get this :
ld.so.1: mysqladmin: fatal: relocation error: file /usr/local/mysql/bin/mysqladmin: symbol sql_protocol_typelib: referenced symbol not found
Killed

so i realise i have to run the mysqld
i got on as root and run the command:
/usr/local/mysql/libexec/mysqld

but i get this:
081008 14:26:48 [ERROR] Fatal error: Please read "Security" section of the manual to find out how to run mysqld as root!

081008 14:26:48 [ERROR] Aborting

081008 14:26:48 [Note] /usr/local/mysql/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown complete

what do you think i am missing here guys

thnx

Hi. I'm not an expert in this field but such an error shouldn't have nothing to do with whether mysqld is running or not. Where did you get your mysql packages from? I think you're missing some dependency or that version is built against a version of some library you don't have (which would explain the problem of not finding a symbol.

Did you know that Solaris 10 ships with mysql 5? If so, why did you install another version?
Code:
enrico@solaris:~$ svcs mysql
STATE STIME FMRI
online Oct_07 svc:/application/database/mysql:version_50
