You may have to properly log out once from your graphic environment for your preferences to be stored.
After that you can safely shutdown your machine with "init 5" and reboot with "init 6", these are the right ways to do it.
If you are running gdm, there is also a way to have shutdown and reboot buttons on the login page, which is better since you do not have to provide root's password to be able to do these tasks.

Also, Solaris is by default less verbose than linux.
