Angry Login Issue

I have Sun sparc 10 version 5.8 machine but I can not login nor the system boot up because error message: No response from ethernet network: Link down -- cable problem, something to do with NIS issue, rpcbind? HOw do stop the machine from searching the NIS? Right now the machine is not connected to the network I just want to boot up to the OS.

if you have a copy of solaris, you could boot from the cd in single user mode
ok boot cdrom -s
from there you could probably disable any NIS services you have running, quite possibly under /etc/ypbind(?)
this may rectify your problem.
Usually with Sun boxes you can (somehow) disable the link problem error that you're getting... usually i just plug it into the network and as long as you feed it a network cable, it stops complaining.. if i can a more comprehensive solution i'll post it up on this thread
