Logical disks and physical location on Sparc
 

How do I find out the physical location of a hard disk from it's logical device name ?

Will position 0, always be c0t0d0s0 for example ? There must be some information on the Sun website for not only the E450 but also other servers.

The reason that I ask this question is say for example disk 1, c0t1d0s0 is displaying I/O errors which usually indicates hard disk errors and I need to replace the hard disk, where can I find the chart that tells me which physical disk to replace.

The information must be on sunsite, however so far I can't find it.

It's in the Owner's Guide.

You can get them from sunsolve if you don't have the printed one that came with the computer.

I have them for the E250 and a couple of others. The E250 is numbered from right to left, top to bottom (I'm at home now, so I'm just grabbing that from memory). On the E250, I have c0t0, c0t8, c0t9, c0t10, c0t11, c0t12 for the internals and c0t6 for the cdrom. If you attach external cabinets, then it all depends on the cabling and dip switches on your external system. You would have to make notes on it if you build it yourself or get an Owner's Guide if you buy something from Sun.

Actually, when I googled "e250 owners guide sun", I found it at docs-pdf.sun.com/805-5160-10/805-5160-10.pdf -- So, I presume you can find others similarly without having to have a sunsolve account.

In short if you know the physical device name, you can use the prtconf command which will then print out the slot number.
