Installing vim in Solaris 9

I m a new bie to Solaris. I have a SPARC machine with Solaris 8 installed. But there is no vim, which makes to strugle with old vi editor. I have Software, installation, Language Solris CDs with me. Is it possible to install vim editor from these CDs.
I tried installing using the vim tar file from the sunfreeware.com. It was not fruitfull because I don't have gcc installed in the machine. When I tried to install gcc it was asking for CC environment variable to be set properly. Can anyone help me in this issue!!

vim binary is included in the software companion CD, you can either download it from sun http://wwws.sun.com/software/solaris.../download.html
or download vim only packages from one of the freewares sites sunfreeware of blastwave.org.
Beware that with sunfreeware site, you also need to download all the prerequisite packages cited (gtk, glib, atk, pango, libiconv, ncurses packages and either the libgcc or gcc package).
Blastwave is far simpler to use: just download the pkg-get script, and then it will do all the dependancy job for you (pkg-get install vim)
