Unhappy Iíve got an old sun box but I canít get it to boot.

I acquired a Sun SPARCstation IPX from a previous employed some time ago and it was working fine with Solaris installed the last time I had it setup in the house. But itís been in the loft for quite a few years now, and when I set it up and switched on the base seemed to be starting and all the SCSI peripherals powered up. However the monitor didnít come on. Now a couple of years ago I acquired an older version of Debian that was apparently working on another similar machine (but that machine is now scrapped) so I was going to try and install this on my machine but can'í get it started!

Iíve pin-checked the video cable (which was a bit loos, with some of the wires showing at the plug join) but it all seems fine.
Any ideas on how to check to see if this monitor is working, without plugging it into another Sparc?
I intend to check the base unite as soon as I find the serial cableÖ but Iíve been looking for over a week now!

Or can you suggest anything else to try?

Since you already checked the pins (with a multi-meter, I assume), you might try to get a VGA adapter off EBay.

They show up there from time to time - though really the first thing I would do is get a serial cable into it and see where it's sitting. It's entirely possible you're getting no signal because something inside the case has come loose and prevented the machine from booting at all.

Thanks for replying, MBybee.

Yes, I checked the cable with a multi-meter. The good news is I started clearing out the loft last night and found the serial cable. So I'm going to try that out tonight.

I forgot about the VGA cable option... I may even be able to 'borrow' one from the techies at work!

Thanks.
