How to work with Solaris
intend to try out Solaris as a desktop OS ...
so how to work with it ... are there any "central" place where i can download it binaries and/or source package ? which one is the best solaris documentation on the net , are there any ? can solaris run X as what i had tried in linux and freebsd , how about the functionalities , "compatiblities" in usage of X apps between solaris and the bsd/linux ... is it possible to have IceWM or Xfce as the wm in solaris ? are there any binaries of these for solaris ? one last thing , what exactly are the contents of " Solaris 10 3/05 Language CD, Multi-language " and " Solaris 10 Companion CD, Multi-language " which are the no.5 and no.6 solaris cds downloadable from their site ... just need to know more from those "hands-on" solaris users about solaris before i start to try it ... |

By the way, if you are just evaluating Solaris and do not plan to use it on production right now, I suggest you to download Solaris Express 09/05 vs Solaris 10 03/05.

whats the exact difference between these two??
|
Solaris 10 is the released and supported commercial O/S (still free) and is based on SunOS 5.10 kernel, Solaris Express is a preview of next Solaris version (also known as Nevada), is based on SunOS 5.11 kernel, each couple of month or so, a new build is made available, last one is build 22.
The distinction is roughly similar to Red Hat Enterprise vs Fedora Core. |
i think i will like solaris ...
btw :: noticed that theres only the need to have one mod in this forum:D [//EndSpeculation] |
