Possibly you are using the wrong "make"?
Could it be that gdal expects gnu-make and you have defaulted to sun-make?

Well, it's your computer - what did you install?

Try
Code:
simon@indigo-prime:~$ make -v
GNU Make 3.81
Copyright (C) 2006 Free Software Foundation, Inc.
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions.
There is NO warranty; not even for MERCHANTABILITY or FITNESS FOR A
PARTICULAR PURPOSE.

This program built for i486-pc-linux-gnu
Hence - I have gnu-make.
Since you have solaris, it is very likely that the "make" command starts to sun-make (bets?). In such a system, gnu-make is often started by entering "gmake" instead.
