how to configure NIS

I have solaris-9 in Ultra-5 Sparc machine
i have configured nis server
as a client i am not getting login with the respective user
can u suggest me proper steps

can you do a "ypcat passwd.byname" on the client and return the user? Does it work on other NIS clients? If not it is not receiving the maps. See the link provided above, it could be one of a number of things.
