Solaris, IIRC does not come with a C compiler installed out of the box.
You'll probably want gcc, GNU make, and the relevant headers/libs your app uses.

First step is to make sure you have developer operating environment (OE) installed. This includes developer libraries, include files, man pages etc.,

Next step is to make sure you have a working C compiler. If "which cc" returns "/usr/ucb/cc", try installing the latest version of Sun Studio compiler suite. You can get the electronic copy for free, from: http://developers.sun.com/prodtech/cc/products/get.html

Recent versions of Solaris bundle gcc too (/usr/sfw/bin/gcc), though Studio 11 (free) cc is giving better code, especially on SPARC.
