Question Enabling Services in Solaris 8

Hi all. I am totally new to Solaris and have installed solaris 8 so as to practice my security lab xcercises. I am trying to find out how to enableserviceslike telnet, ftp, smtp, finger and NFS on my solaris system so as to allow remote access OR to see how secure the system is when such services are enabled. Any ideas on how to go about this? Also any links to some corresponding documentation would be appreciated. Thanks

AFAIK the services you mentioned are enabled by default. If you want to disable them edit /etc/inetd.conf and comment (put a #) the respestive lines. Only nfs and sendmail (smtp) are started from scripts in /etc/rc2.d and /etc/rc3.d. For more info about these and other dangerous services take a look here

Regards

About securing your host and these service, one common answer is to use tcp wrappers, which is adding a security access control layer on top of inetd based services.
If you want go further, you can also migrate to Solaris 10 and use zones to isolate each services from each other and from the global zone.
