Adding RAID drivers in Solaris x86 6/06

Hi,

We are trying to install Solaris x86 6/06 on Dell PowerEdge 2850 which has PERC4/i. We have got the RAID driver image from (http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=431fd1be). Made the driver floppy and during installation when it gives options for jumpstart, default, add drivers etc. we choose "add drivers" and the "F" for floppy. It displays that it is "adding driver to miniroot" and then prompts us to tell it if we want to add a driver from floppy, cdrom or end the operation. We end it. We move ahead with the installation and it passes on through system identification and when its finally done and starts to read the disk to make partitions thats where it shows an error something like "disks not found. make sure the disks are cabled".

Has someone been successful installing Solaris x86 release 6/06 on Dell PowerEdge 2850? Kindly state how it was done.

We want to test and play with Solaris 10 6/06's ZFS and Z-RAID features.

Regard,
Hasan

May be I'm missing something here, but one main point of ZFS is that it doesn't require any underlying RAID support.
Are your disks seen without the driver you fail to install ?

From what I can make out from reading the documentation I think Jilliagre is right.
The RAID is handled by ZFS not by any other hardware or software.
I suggest you try without the RAID driver

Yes, both of you are right. We tried without the RAID driver and it worked. But we still have to configure it from system's built in configuration tool within BIOS. We made the first two as mirror. and the remaining 4 as RAID 5. It has installed successfully, but the OS can not detect it. If any harddisk fails then the OS will not be able to report it.

If it doesnt work that way then we will try to play with Z-RAID.

There are numerous sources that say Z-RAID is better than RAID 5. I would easily favor Z-RAID over RAID-5.

Just a small correction, that's RAID-Z, not Z-RAID.

For RAID-Z advantages over RAID-5:
