xwindows wont boot
 

i just finish install slackware but when i run start it look like it going to boot when it gos black for a sec then i get this error:confused:

screen not found
:confused:

oh and btw this install is on a dell inspiron 2600 celleron chip

im thinking i have to edit xf86config but iv never don it and it ask alot of hard where question that i just dont know how to go about getting the info

tip and tricks would be appreciated .

Not a lot to go on but let me see if I can help.. There are two things that helped me more than anything about CLI. Enter "vimtutor" in your console and you'll get a short but very good lesson on using vi. It takes about 30 minutes and it's well worth it. Then type in "mc" and if you installed everything, Midnight Commander will startup. It's a simple file manager and you'll be used to it in no time. Then you can post a copy of your XF86config and we can check it out.

Ther are several ways to configure X. xf86config is the best. others are: xf86cfg, xfree86setup, xf86cfg --textmode, XFree86 --configure.

i understand that much but i have no idea what info ima going to need in order to edit xf86config corectly?!

again im new so i dont know if there anycommands to tell you hardware specs

Mostly you need to know what kind of graphics card you have, your monitor refresh rates and what kind of mouse. You can ignore the questions about video memory, and you can say no to group switching.
You might try xf86cfg --textmode first and then look at the XF86Config that it generates. that will tell you what card you have.
Try searching the forum here for tips on setting up XF86Config. Read the docs suggested when you run xf86config.

most important is your graphics card and its memory. And your screens h-sync and v-sync. Other things you need to know is what kind of mouse you have got, and your keyboard map(for your country) Think that was all you need to know.
(hardest thing to get is your graphics cards memory, if you still have windows on the machine, you can get it by running "dxdiag" where you choose the tab Display, there it is the entry "Approx. Total Memory"

Actually, xf86config asks for the amount of memory but then comments out the line in XF86Config. It appears to use the figure to generate the list of possible screen resolutions.
