Xfce: I can't log out from Xfce and go back to the login prompt

Hi! I installed Slackware 14.1 on an HP240 core i3 third generation laptop. When I try to logout from Xfce, instead of going back to the login prompt, the system hangs with a slightly colored full screen (light pink) and nothing can be done to go back to the login prompt. Only switch off and reboot!
What happens!
What can be done?
Thank you in advance for the help

It sounds like you have a problem with the video driver. That is just my best guess, since you have provided very little information.

Try restarting the x server. The hot key combination of Ctrl + Alt + backspace will do that. If you get a good display, you can look into the driver you installed.

What video hardware do you have ? As root, run the command, 'lspci' without the quotes. Copy and paste the results.

Did you install an Nvidia driver or one for an ATI card?

Thanks for your reply.
It is a hp240 laptop with a core i3 processor third generation.
I have to use nomodeset, else I get a blank screen shortly after booting. The Vesa driver loads. But not the Intel

You have given the output of 'lsmod' rather than the output of 'lspci'.

I suspect that your machine has the Intel HD 4000.
There are reports that the kernel parameter 'acpi_osi=Linux' can be used in place of the highly undesirable nomodeset to get that chipset to work.

Thanks for the lspci output. You actually have this:
Quote:
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
Does the screen go blank, but everything else appear to proceed normally? If so, try 'acpi_backlight=vendor' as the kernel parameter. Also try with both 'acpi_osi=Linux' and 'acpi_backlight=vendor'. Reported to work for similar hardware. http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopi...f=191&t=144441

The problem is that the intel driver that should be used for X will not load if KMS is disabled with the nomodeset kernel option. The system drops back to using the less capable VESA driver (as seen in your log).

I wish the OP at this thread with similar hardware to yours had been clearer. It seems to suggest that a proper combination of kernel parameters would allow proper operation without the nomodeset option. http://askubuntu.com/questions/39824...et-working-but

Another possible thing to try would be blacklisting the mei-me kernel module. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...4/#post5006248

Glad that you got it working.
Thanks to you for reporting back with your solution as it may help some one else.

Very kind of you, but the thanks should go to the wondrous core team of Slackware developers, as they are the real reason you will keep slacking.
