I think another good forum would be for alsa.

Woah... the first distro forum in LQ to get a subforum :)

Does this mean installing Slack is really "that" hard

kc00l 12-15-2003 08:41 AM

Actually I don't think the reason of the creation of the new forum is installing Slackware being hard.

OTOH I saw many posts by people being scared of even trying to install Slackware after they used other distribution without bothering about X configuration and other automatic configured (in other distros) apps.

Just a nitpick as a slackware user ;). Installing Slack is a piece of cake. Configuring it can be a pain in the but for a new user. By having installation be its own forum I think we'll scare away a lot of folks who might enjoy slack. The reason i switched is I didn't like the bloat and sluggishness of other popular distros.

My opinion is that this subforum be renamed to "Slackware - Configuration".

There are a number of common issues that have been asked over and over again that could be moved to this forum.

Any questions about configuring XFree, sound, ATI / NVidia drivers, etc. could go here.

Just a thought.

Nice addition. Hopefully more people will give Slack a go now.

zigmund555 has a good point if it was renamed configuration I think more people would give slack a try. Slackware isn't hard to install. it may take a couple tries but it is not hard. If it is renamed or a configuration is added then i think it should have one for alsa because i have found a lot of posts in my search to fix my own sound. I haven't used slack long but how often do new versions come out?

kipp 12-16-2003 04:11 PM

my thoughts..

just thinking about the new forum.. the idea of having a slackware installation forum makes sense. and having it renamed slackware - configuration alsa makes sense.

1) the idea of renaming it to configuration would be pointless in the sense that then the Slackware forum may end up obsolete. The use for that is General Questions and Configuration and Installation.

2) maybe this one was created in the fact that it can be more easily read and organized by keeping the installation "crap" since most of its bogues (being to hard) once you actually try it. Maybe its me being more keen to organization, but to put installation in a seperate catagorey is a good idea. that way the Slackware forum isnt as hard to read through.

hmm.. is this even a debatable topic or is it staying no matter what?

sorry if this is biased.. just my 2 pennies

hi all,

when it came up for me to give the slack a try, the only thing i really feared was the installation process--which turned out to be just what it was, a fear and nothing else.

if taking away people´s fears of slack can be the sense of this subforum--great!

maybe much people like me would have tried it earlier, if slack´s reputation wouldn´t be that of a dinosaur ...

so if anyone wants to try slack: it really doesn´t bite you!

jeremy 12-16-2003 08:17 PM

The installation forum is staying. I am going to see how distro sub-forums go over in the busier forums. I anticipate well, and if this holds true more will be added.

I'm sure this will click with the other Slackware dudes.

Glad to see we are all having fun in the new sub forum ;) And I just wanted to note that I have just come upon this as well ;) What a true Slacker I am, as well as a Slackware user :D

Cool
