Where is boot menu?
Hi
Well, I tryed to install Linux Slackware 10, and I disappointed when I reached to big problems on two different computer. Looks like slackware has serious problem with me :-(
OK, let me describe what happened for my home computer. I already had Windows XP installed on my system, and after installing Slackware, I reboot the computer, and I recieved this message:
Grub Grub Geom Error
And nothing more. I can't do anything, just I can press Alt+Ctrl+Delete to reboot. After booting from a linux boot floppy disk, I can login as root, and take a look at LILO.CONF. looks like everything is OK, however, here it is:
# LILO configuration file
# generated by 'liloconfig'
#
# Start LILO global section
boot = /dev/hda
default = "Linux"
message = /boot/boot_message.txt
prompt
timeout = 1200
# Override dangerous defaults that rewrite the partition table:
change-rules
reset
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
vga = 773
# Normal VGA console
# vga = normal
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k
# vga=791
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x32k
# vga=790
# VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x256
# vga=773
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x64k
# vga=788
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x32k
# vga=787
# VESA framebuffer console @ 800x600x256
# vga=771
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x64k
# vga=785
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x32k
# vga=784
# VESA framebuffer console @ 640x480x256
# vga=769
# End LILO global section
# Windows bootable partition config begins
other = /dev/hda1
label = "Windows"
table = /dev/hda
# Windows bootable partition config ends
# Linux bootable partition config begins
image = /boot/vmlinuz
root = /dev/hda11
label = "Linux"
read-only
# Linux bootable partition config ends
Why I can't see the boot menu? Is there sth wrong with my installation? I had the same problem with another PC, but this time, system boots immediately to windows, without showing any error message. Where is the problem?
One note which maybe useful to help me. In both system, when it asked me to specify a SWAP partition, I answered I want to skip this step. Does it harm the OS?
Besides, when I use mc to surf my file system, I noticed that there isn't anything named "hda" under my /boot directory.
Please help this newbie :-(
Amir Hosein
P.S. Today I re-format my hard disk, and re-install the OS. this time it showed me some "99"s on screen, then told me it can't find boot record, and it asked me to insert a disk to drive...

Eliminating the obvious: After generating the lilo.conf file, did you actually run lilo to install it?

Well rushenas,
Look, they are another boot loaders like grub that just changing the file update the boot loader, now on lilo after configured the lilo.conf you sould run:
#lilo [enter]
Windows* add
Linux add
#
I guess this resolved your issue.

You are trying to configure lilo.conf, but GRUB is installed. You'll need to remove GRUB from the boot sector in order to install lilo. I'd suggest you install the lilo boot sector to a floppy first. Then when working you can try to rmove GRUB and reinstall lilo there.
