weird sound problem

Got 2 Slack-10 boxen (both kernel 2.4.26):
one with KDE 3.2.3 and one with KDE 3.3.1.
Used the original Firefox installer (0.9) for 3.2.3 and used the
slackpkg 1.0-pre from for 3.3.1.
Installed MPlayer and -plugin on both boxen.

MPLayers' video and sound in Firefox with KDE 3.2.3 are OK.
With KDE 3.3.1 video is OK but no sound.
RealPlays' sound and video in 3.3.1 are OK.
KsCD in 3.3.1 is OK too.
No KDE login sound in 3.3.1.

Any idea where I should start to solve this problem?
