ok

have no idea what "path" is supposed to be in the how-to

it appers that it works for a microsecond , then quits.

when booting in console . gpm loads and the mouse cursor blinks.
same when booting x , the cursor just blinks.

...almost like a conflict ....

tried path /dev/mouse /dev/mouse0 /dev/mouse1 /dev/input/mice

...and of course i cant post the syslog data because ... im in xp

...something like

usb not accepting new connections .....

it seems that you have a new type of mouse.
i should have referred you to this article instead:
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Advanced_Mouse

try reading it. it might help
my opinion here is that you are a having a wrong config or a missing device driver.

anyway the mouse works in xp right?

Got it.

In modconf, under kernel/drivers/input, "mousedev" had not been selected. I installed that module,
and now all seems well on the western front.

Now, in my dmesg output, near the end, there's a line that says:
Code:

mice: PS/2 mouse device common for all mice

Also, lsmod now lists "mousedev" along with "[usbkbd hid usbmouse keybdev]"
after the "input" module.

Sweet!

still no ( bear with me here )
knoppix hangs at
ata1:dev 0 ata ma udma/133 78xxxx etc

2.6 kernel hangs at the same spot .. in slack

i suspect my via controller is not working the way it should ... but i have a promise controller ...
ill switch over to that one and see if i can boot.

...all this just to get a mouse plugged in ..... it is getting stupid .... quickly

ok ---
windows breaks --- of course - i need to install the promise drivers ... easy enough

and

i get a kernel painic booting with grub
please append a proper root= blah blah blah yadda yadda

root (hd0,1)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda2 ro vga=791
boot

thats the bad new --- it will not boot
good news - mouse detects and appers to be working perfectly ...

now i just need to fix xp
and enter the correct grub settings ....

says
xp on partition 1 hd 1
slack on part 2 hd 1

even closer ...
i could laugh or cry at this point ....
still .... almost home

weird my connection dropped there .... very strange.

xp on partition 1 hd 1 = (hd0,1)
slack on part 2 hd 1 = (hd0,2)

config your /boot's root to (hd0,2)

ill try that again i guess-

the error is no syncing VFS
anyway - i think the kernel there is one I made up yesterday . looks like a good kernel
im just worried about breaking my win boot, i do not want to break it ...

im gonna try

root (hd0,2)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/sda2
boot

and

some variations.

and ill try sda3 sda4 because i have four parts , and it seems like they get mixed up in order, i've noticed that before.

if not then i'll try the initrd

thx

ok

i just booted into xp with grub

root (hd0,0)
rootnoverify
makeactive
chainloader +1
boot

and knoppix cd still appears to be non-functional

and
root(hd0,2)
gives error unknown part type

so
root (hd0,1)
i believe is the correct part

one more thing - may be important - maybe not
i could NOT compile grub myself - it failed
i ended up installing the redhat rpm package.
maybe important - i dont think so though.
