Upgrade to Slack 14.2 from 14.0 - skipping 14.1

I have 32-bit Slackware 14.0. Is it okay to upgrade straight to 14.2, skipping the intervening distribution? Or should I do the installation in two steps?

No, it isn't supported to upgrade from more than one release apart. You would need to go from 14.0 -> 14.1 and then 14.1 -> 14.2 following the UPGRADE.TXT and CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT for each release.

At that point, it would probably be easier to just back up what you need and do a fresh install. It will likely save you a lot of time. If you were to upgrade, many of your 3rd-party programs will need to be recompiled anyway due to the library bumps between those Slackware versions, so a fresh install would make sure everything is built for the version you're running.

If its an upgrade, not a new install, you have to do it in two steps. Look on the DVD for a well written how to. I have used the documented upgrade procedure and it has worked well for me. Are you going to stay with a 32 bit system?

If you do not want to do the two step process, and you have /home on a separate partition, wiping the root partition and installing 14.2 will not take all that much time. Of course, back up all your data before you begin. You will have to re-install most programs that you may have added from Sbo, either way.

Hope this helps.

Bassmadrigal and camorri -- thanks very much -- I'll do it in two steps. Yes, I'm going to stay with a 32-bit system.
