Unable to boot from DVD

Hey guys, I'm new to linux/Slackware but I'm fairly familiar with Windows.. so..

I downloaded the Slackware11 dvd iso so that I could install Slackware on a separate partition from my Windows, but my computer doesn't seem to be able to boot from all the DVD's I've burnt. I'm burning the DVD as an ISO, and MagicISO confirmed that the disc was bootable (unfortunately I am only running the trial version of it so I can't burn it from there). I used DeepBurner to burn the DVDs, as that's what I've been using and it has been working fine...

Exploring the DVD-drive on one of the completed DVD's I can only see a blank DVD. I figure maybe it's just a weird linux thing, but my computer does not recognize the DVD during the bootup sequence.

I've tried twice now.. don't want to waste my precious DVD's if there's something obvious I'm doing wrong. Tonight though, I'm going out and buying some HP 16x DVD's because I've often heard that Brandname media burns much better than generic media..

Any and all help is much appreciated,
Thanks,
phrzn

Are you sure that it is set to boot from CD rom from your computer bios? Double check that and get back to us.

Thanks

Well, I tried burning it to one of my new HP DVD's and it is still coming up blank. When I put it into the disc drive, Windows brings up the "Blank Disc Inserted" dialogue and asks me what I would like to do.

Physically, on the back, however, it is easy to tell that the disc has been burnt; the circular laser lines ring their way out from the center.

If anyone can offer any explanation... please do!

Thanks,
phrzn

Hi,

Did you try to boot the dvd? Is your bios setup to boot from the dvd as the first boot device?

If you did burn the iso image then when you insert the dvd, a window with the filesystem should open not a query to choose what to open with. This indicates that you did burn a 'coaster'.

Check and make sure that the dvd burn application is indeed using the 'iso' file and burning a 'image' of that file to the dvd.

If you want a free windows dvd application then go here.

Knoppix can do that using K3B.

I may look into that. My computer teacher recommended I try out Fedora Core 6 and he gave me some CD's that he burnt. That'll hopefully help me bypass my burning problem (that's what I think it is) and I'll finally be free of Windows!

If it doesn't work I'll be back.

Thanks guys.
