this might be a dumb question
i'm pretty new with linux, and i just tried to install slack 10.1, and i finished everything (I followed instructions on a site) and i remember seeing when i booted i would see the defauly name darkstar, but mine is grub, and i don't know how to boot. i think grub has something to do with gnome (which i don't want, i want kde) and i remember selecting kde. any help?

Do yourself a favour and install the new Slackware 10.2 after deleting your old 10.1 installation. Second, try for more info or maybe if it works.

ok actually one other question i don't really feel like making another forum, but i have a 150 GB hard drive, and i just want suggestions on how big i should make each partition, and what should i asign each partition? thanks.

Regarding grub vs. darkstar -
Grub is the name of the bootloader (read slackbook or visit darkstar is the default name given to your computer during the install.

Regarding the partition question -
I'd suggest one swap partition in roughly 1 to 2 times your RAM unless you intend to do some heavy calculations on your machine. Then create one fairly large partition ~30 GB which you mount as /. Leave the rest of your hdd empty and you can easily make more partitions later for special purposes as /home or other linux installs if you'd like to fiddle around learning other distros etc.

God Luck!

I have the same question/situation.I installed darkstar on another hd and at start up I get the same screen.I know grub is the bootloader and is asking which partition to boot from(I think).I have been using mandriva 2005le for a couple of months(My first linux and I'm loving it!)so I'm just getting familiar with the linux ways.
I know mand2005's Installer made the partitions hda1,3,5.I have tried a few guesses with no luck.
If anyone else has used darkstar linux what is the command to have grub boot it?
I let the installer use the default settings and format the entire hd.
Thanks for any info.

alright i kinda forgot what i did haha, but i did know it was something with lilo, you have to configure it manually, because grub is the bootloader for fedora

Had the same problem ... that what happens when we don't RTFM.

If you used EXT2/3 format, you can't install your boot loader in the super block ..
Try using good old MBR ;)
Worked for me !

Hmmm I thought I did install it in the mbr, against suggestions made by the installer that it might be unsafe?anyway I'll re-install later and try again.I'll post back w/results.
