Fresh install of 14.0 64-bit to new machine: frozen gui at startx

1. chose kde
2. entered startx from command line
3. got blue screen, then blacked out, then after 2 seconds, blue screen again,
with first icon (a disk I think), a cursor frozen mid-screen
4. no keyboard
5. no mouse action

here is the output of:

1. Rinse and repeat. I have had occasions that I have had to try starting KDE a few times before it would come up successfully.
2. Try another window manager e.g xfce
3. Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log for errors.

thanks allend; i just noticed you are from my old home "town"

(i love the "argo": "rinse and repeat"... had a chuckle)

: 0 )

So, you are telling me to re-install right? (run through the "cycle" again?)

I don't think allend meant that you need to reinstall anything.

If you start at runlevel 3 (console mode), type 'xwmconfig' to chose another DE or WM (than KDE) before running 'startx'.

If you start in runlevel 4, choose another DE or WM clicking the arrow (IIRC).

No, not reinstall, just try starting KDE a few times. KDE does autodetection at startup and stores information in configuration files. This may not always be a smooth process.
If you are still having problems, then try a different window manager, to test whether it is just KDE or a more fundamental problem with X.
If an alternative window manager works, then try starting KDE with compositing disabled. From CHANGES_AND_HINTS.TXT
Code:
Regardless of your chipset (though it seems more common with intel), if KDE
crashes on startup, try disabling the Composite extension (which will also
disable all of the fancy desktop effects). Place the following content in
  a file at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/disable-composite.conf:
    Section "Extensions"
      Option "Composite" "Disable"
    EndSection
If an alternative window manager fails, then it may be a problem with X. The output from /var/log/Xorg.0.log can help here.

Aside- This 'Mexican' says to watch out for banana benders!

I notice you are running "current".
I think I might cut my losses with this bootable version 14 64-bit and
go for a clean install of current.

(when i moved up here to northern rivers i was told by a casual acquaintance to change the plates on my bike so people would stop aiming for me on the road ...
they are strange drivers up here: more conservative somehow and far less tolerant of "bad" behaviour (aka "creative transits") by bikers: ie: lane-splitting, for example, which is charmingly overlooked by melbourne drivers and ruthlessly persecuted by their new south welshperson equivalents)

cheers

After repeated attempts using various DEnvironments, I gave up and re-installed.
Now, in ALL DE, the gui is fragmented: parts of screen unreadable, terminal output patchy.

I'm going to capture the log report but here is something else which might be diagnostic: when I tried to run install in VirtualBox, I got an error message on startup saying that VM was seeing my machine as 32-bit and that as such it wouldn't be able to run the inserted software in VM (nameley, my 64-bit version of slackware)

Code:
[ 18.292] (II) intel(0): EDID for output VGA1
[ 18.292] (II) intel(0): Manufacturer: AOC Model: 2450 Serial#: 11613

Seems that you have two outputs connected to one monitor. What happens if you pull the VGA cable?

Not much, except:
the web cam now works,
my grub menu has been fixed (it was skipping two menu items per click),
and I hope, that when I re-install slack, it will recognize just one output
and install correctly, because, currently, it is still displaying fragmented.

THANK YOU most mostly!
For your time and kindness in getting back to me.
This is truly a classic example of gross violation of good old RTFM principle,
and for that, I owe you an apology, sincerely offered, for having wasted your time.

Cheers,
lebec

GUI fragmenting on bootup

Actually, despite having solved a number of problems, the unplugging of one or the other of the second outputs for the monitor still has not solved my difficulties getting slackware to run in a gui, regardless of DE.

Anyone got any idea what this might indicate?

I have a perfect gui in both archbang and mint but regardless of which DE I try when i run slacware, I cannot get a clean gui:
all menus and their items have letters missing, to the point where after a few clicks and selections, it becomes all but unreadable.

Thanks for any ideas.

If the other distributions work on your hardware, then so will Slackware. The problems you describe suggest a corrupted Slackware install or missing libraries.
Are you running a full Slackware 14.0 install or did you skip some packages series?
Are you confident that the install media is OK?
Have you tried to upgrade to Slackware-current?

Two things to note by way of response (thx so much for staying with me on this one!)

1. I have downloaded a fresh iso but the md5sum number doesn't match the iso!
2. Ever since my penultimate install attempt, during which I managed to get installer to wrongly "see" the contents of cdrom as a "swap-file", I now have a memtest in my grub menu (???!!!!)

I guess it is time to bite down and go for ANOTHER 2.4GB d.load of slack 14....

4 hous later: I dloaded Slack14 64-bit, again, burned it slower this time (just in case) went to boot up and noticed this time an error message flash by as first item after booting:
"error: no device ..." followed by what looks like a md5sum number, but i can't be sure and it goes by too quick to read
