As always, this is my broad brush understanding of the situation. Only one app can "own" the sound card at one time and so what you need to do is find a server to intermediate between the sound card and sound capable apps. I know of two, Esound and Arts. I use esound because arts is part of KDE and I don't run KDE however if you use KDE I understand Arts is a good choice (and POSSIBLY superior). The config for both can be found by googling.
