slackware wont reconize external hd

i am trying to do a triple boot between slackware, fc2 and xp. i have an external hd with a 10 gig ext3 partition labeled as /dev/sda5. when i go to install slackware i select my already made fc2 swap partition (/dev/hda5) as the swap partition and then it asks me where to place root. the only options it gives me is my xp and fc2 partitions which is the internal hd.

the external hd is connected through a usb 2.0 pcmcia card. before i entered setup i typed pcmcia as slackware suggested but the card's lights never came on. i guess this is why slackware doesnt reconize the external hd. what am i missing?

also when installation finished will lilo or grub reconize fc2 and xp and allow me to boot to them?

Does your computers BIOS support booting from a USB device? If you need to load the kernel off the USB device in order to mount the USB device, how are you going to load the kernel? It's a chicken and egg situation.

bios doesnt support booting from a usb device but i have a boot partition on the internal hd. the only partition that is going to be on the external hd is /. the swap and boot partitions are on the internal. i think i can get grub boot what i need. also i am installing from cds and was under the impression that the cd installation uses a kernel at start up to reconize the various hardware. i might be wrong though.
