I'm fairly new to linux, but used RedHat for a little while and became pretty comfortable with it. Taking advice from a friend, I wanted to try Slackware. The install went moderately well until one of the last steps-- the kernel install and lilo activation. Unfortunately I'm installing on a laptop which only supports either a floppy or cdrom at once. Needless to say, when I was told to put a disk back in to install the kernel, I was dismayed since I didn't know what kernel to pick from the cd. So, in short, I f***** up. Now I don't know how to install the kernel without doing a clean install of slackware. Also, lilo wouldn't install either, but that's probably because of my mistake with the kernel. Please help me out here, I'll answer any other questions you have to make this more clear.
Thanks,
john
Um... from what you have said, you will have to do a clean install of slackware.
Can you still boot into redhat? Or is Lilo totally skrewed so you cannot get the bootloader screen at all?
RedHat got formatted when I started this install. When the LILO screen came up in the installation, I picked the "safe" option and an error popped up saying that LILO couldn't be installed (or something to that effect). If I can just get the kernel on there, I think I could resolve this, but I don't know how to do that from this point in the installation.
Right: normally the installation software will do this for you... did you install from cd?
Anyway:
While I use GRUB, I have some experience with LILO (and prefer GRUB).
To get the kernel up on the lilo screen, you have to edit the lilo.conf file (I think that's what it is called - it's been awhile and you're online right now I guess so I'll favour a quick reply over a 100% accurate one, whatever, the file will be recognisable - normally in /boot directory or nearby)
You'll see how to do it from what is already there.
