Slackware 13 install disk getting stuck at udevd events
Got slack? I want my slack 13
Okay, here's the thing.
On this system I can install slack 12.2 with no problems. But, for some reason the Slackware 13 install disk (dvd or cd) is getting stuck in the boot process at:
Starting udevd: /sbin/udevd --daemon
Triggering udevd events: /sbin/udevadm trigger
After that is just a blinking cursor and my dead end. I have no idea what's going on here or how to get pass it. All I know is I want my slack 13
Hopping this will be useful and Thanks:

Hi,
Welcome to LQ!
Where did you get your Slackware 13.0 ISO? Do Not just rely on a check with k3b or whatever application.
If you downloaded the cd/dvd iso then be sure to check the md5sum for the original iso. From the cli;
Code:
~#cd /downloadisolocation #cdromiso.iso cdromiso.md5
~#md5sum -c cdromiso.md5 #substitute the correct name to check
This will check the download ISO with the known md5sum that you should also get when you download the ISO.
You could have a bad burn, to check the cd/dvd with the original ISO md5, use this
CdromMd5sumsAfterBurning .
A little work on your part to check the cd/dvd to original ISO but worth the effort. If a bad burn then you could slowdown the image burn speed. Be sure the media is matched to your device!
If the ISO & image check out OK then try passing the 'noapci', 'noapic' and 'noudev' at boot to the kernel.

Thanks onebuck,
Yes the disk are good and using "noapic noudev" it booted and I did a full install. Now the thing is, I dual boot vista and Slackware so I install lilo to the root partition (sdb6) and set vista's boot loader to hand over to lilo. So I need to boot the root partition using the install disk one last time so I can dd lilo over to a file for vista's boot loader and it won't boot. When I:
boot: hugesmp.s noapic noudev root=/dev/sdb6... it boots up to the scsi section and then it hits a snag. After some time it comes back with:
hdb: DMA timeout retry
hdb: timeout waiting for DMA
Here's my system running Slackware 12.2

Hi,
Yea I should have included that, I tried that first with similar results except for the last two lines, it didn't go that far:
hdb: DMA timeout retry
hdb: timeout waiting for DMA
"it boots up to the scsi section and then it hits a snag."

Okay,
But, I don't know how to use it.
Like this: boot: hugesmp.s noapic noudev noprobe root=/dev/sdb6...?
I'm in uncharted territory here.

you can try also with
hugesmp.s noapic noudev ide-core.nodma=0.1 root=/dev/sdb6
or
hugesmp.s noapic noudev ide-core.noprobe=0.1 root=/dev/sdb6
taken from Documentation/kernel-parameters.txt in 2.6.30 kernel sources (additional infos are in
ide.txt )

Hi,
Thanks for your reply's and help. I've been busy so I have not been able to work on this like I normally would.
I was able to boot the new slack 13 install using the slack 12.2 install disk and "dd lilo over to a file for vista's boot loader"
so now lilo is all setup. It's just that the system will not boot. I disconnected the memory card reader and the useless hp box reader.
I tried all the above and still the same results.
It stops here:
hdb: DMA timeout retry
hdb: timeout waiting for DMA

Have you tried upgrading your computer's BIOS? I had a similar (worse, actually) problem with my box, the kernel would jump into a panic when it reached the SCSI probe section. Upgrading the BIOS to the vendor's latest fixed that.
Strangely enough, that was with the 32bit Slackware 13.0 ... I had no issues at all booting and installing 64bit Slackware on the same machine.

Thanks,
I double check the bios. Thing is this rig has no problem at all with slack 12.2
So, what has changed?

The kernel has been updated of course. The new kernel was not playing nice with my old BIOS.

Okay, I updated the bios to be safe but, still the same result.
It still hangs here:
hdb: DMA timeout retry
hdb: timeout waiting for DMA
So I tried disconnecting my two dvd combos since they are the only /dev/hd.
And it worked! Lilo booted Slackware 13 with no problems.
Not sure where to go from here.
