Slack_11: home + modules question

I installed Slackware 11 once already, but I just used the "sati 1" or whatever it's called - the standard 2.14 kernel

I now have the 3rd cd which I didn't before. I understand the modules are on this #3. I want to install either the 2.6.18 or the not so new 2.6.17.13.

When I got to the kernel installation before there were all these kernels with funny names that meant nothing to me. I just used the sata 1. Is it hard to find the "testing", & whatever the other category is?

What about this big 26? is it good?

I understand also, once I do have the kernel installed, next I need the modules [in cd#3] When I re-boot, after I'm up & running can I put in cd #3 & get these modules, or do I have to boot with cd#3?

-----------------------------

Also, I want to have my "Home" separate. With Zenwalk I used
Quote:
/

/home
......as well as the swap, of course. In Slackware the labeling of the home drive that way did not seem to work. I didn't see the big /home partition,I only had the 9 GB root partition.

These questions may sound dumb, but I just want to eliminate any surprises.

O.K., the #1 Slackware user in America, has made some progress !

I gave up on the separate home file, I'll worry about that some other time.

Now, I have Slackware 11 up & running with the "test26.s" kernel. I looked in cd#3 for the modules to install, in "testing" I don't see anything marked for the 2.6.18 Kernel.

In "extra" I did see the 2.6.17.13 modules.

What am I suppose to install from the "testing" to get this "test26.s" fully functional?

Once I do get the stuff, where do I put it? I have not bothered to set up a user account yet, I'm in root.

I'm actually using Slax right now, to view this page, I'm not too fussy on running in root.

In the directory "/testing/packages/linux-2.6.18/" you will find the package "kernel-modules-2.6.18-i486-1.tgz" which contains the kernel modules for your test26.s kernel.

Regarding that /home partition.
When you boot the Slackware CD, and run cfdisk or fdisk to setup partitions, that is the point where you create the separate partition that will contain your /home later on.
Then, in setup, there is a point where Slackware will look for all available partitions marked as "linux" (which is the default type for partitions you create with (c)fdisk anyway). You will get a chance to select any and all of these partitions, decide whether they need formatting with ext3, reiser or another filesystem, and finally you tell the installer where in the root filesystem the partitions have to be mounted (you are able to type the moint directory yourself there). So, if you had created a separate partition for your /home, you would highlight that one here, and type "/home" to indicate that that should be the place to mount that partition.

O.K., I got the /home problem solved, I must have typed something wrong before?

I couldn't find the 2.6.18 it just is not there. I reinstalled using the huge26.s, I mean what's the dif anyhow?

I got the 2.6.17.13 stuff from cd#3. I put it in........................

/lib/modules

along side the ones that were there already. I extracted the tar.gz [39mb] files & rebooted. It said, "cannot find modules for 2.6.17.13.'

I then copied everything in the bigger folder & threw that in as well. Still it says [on boot up, all that text you see] "cannot find modules for 2.6.17.13."

I am beggining to think I am not the #1 Slackware user in America afterall, I mean if I was I would have modules for the huge26.s kicking in?

I also have;

-no internet connection [I tried to fix this, but not that hard, I have fixed this with RoFreesBSD before]

-no sound

- the little wheel on my mouse does not work

The slackware files are all .tgz. There's no need to extract them. You simply sign in as root user and type 'installpkg ****.tgz'. There's a slackware book available online. There's a link to it on slackware.com.

The testing kernel (2.6.18 plus the modules) can be found on CD#4 in /testing-2.6.18/linux-2.6.18/

Well the difference between 2.6.18 and 2.6.17.13 ... which is quite something.

I hope you did not just untar that package into /lib/modules? You should have been using the installpkg command to install that SLackware package's contents to it's proper location.

I tried the installpkg command in terminal, it said something about, "does not end in tgz".

I give up, I've had it. I wiped my hard drive with killdisk, I'm just going to run Slax Linux in my cd burner, & use my dvd burner to access my dvd with all my data. I don't need to install anything on a hard drive right now,I need a break from this. I don't feel like fighting a never ending battle just to get an operating system to work.
