Exclamation slack12: can't create md-files

Hello,

we have installed some PCs with slackware12. We used
the standard-setup. All PCs should no be equid with
an softmirror. But there is a problem.

After the slackware-setup with the 2.6.21.5huge-Kernel of the Distribution there are no md-files. There are no /dev/md1, /dev/md2 or /dev/md/1, /dev/md/2. Only one md-file exists.

root@pc:/dev# ls -l md*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-09-12 12:02 md0 -> md/0

md:
total 0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 2007-09-12 12:02 0

If I try to create the missing md-files with mknod, they
disappear after the next reboot.

If I use the mdadm-tool, there no md-files created:

root@pc:/dev# mdadm --create /dev/md/1 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb3 --auto=yes

mdadm: raid-devices set twice: 2 and 2

Best regards

That is strange, but I notice the command you use to create the mirror is a bit different from mine.

I just do: $> mdadm --create /dev/md1 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb3 and I write /etc/raidtab for my raid mirror.

If there is no md1 and md2, if you run df, what do you see?

Hello,

the part --auto=yes is only a test. I tried it with
the same command like you did. But there are no md-files
created in /dev nor in /dev/md

But now I see from your question, that I made a silly mistake! In my line:

mdadm --create /dev/md/1 --level=1 --raid-devices=2 --raid-devices=2 missing /dev/sdb3

there is --raid-devices TWICE! This was the error.
Now it works:

root@pc:/dev# ls -l md*
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-09-12 18:51 md0 -> md/0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 4 2007-09-12 18:51 md1 -> md/1

md:
total 0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 0 2007-09-12 18:51 0
brw-rw---- 1 root disk 9, 1 2007-09-12 18:51 1

Thank you for your help and Best regards!
