Question Slack 12.0 Install Hangs During Setup For USB Boot Disk

Trying to install Slack 12.0 using CDs 1 to 3. The installation of the package series' complete with no problems (<A> to <Y>). However, in the "Configuration" stage my computer hangs at the "Create bootable USB Stick" stage. Even when I tell the installer to skip creating the USB boot stick, it still hangs.

I happen to be using a PC with a USB keyboard and mouse. Is there any way I can start the "setup" program without having it try to create the bootable USB stick?

I have been able to install previous versions of Slackware, no problems. But this is the first version that tries to make a bootable USB stick.

did it actually create the boot disk on the USB drive?

have you checked your media? md5sums?

Nope. It does nothing when it hangs. Tried selecting <Skip>, nothing happens. Tried again with a USB stick inserted, nothing happens. I believe the CD iso images I downloaded are good.

However, I have been able to do a work-around for this. It ain't pretty but it looks like it works:
1. Boot the machine with disc 1.
2. Log on as root and start the setup command.
3. Edit the partition info.
4. Install the packages.
5. While the packages are installing I open a second console. The offending script is /mnt/var/log/setup/setup.80.make-bootdisk. This script uses the "rescan-scsi-bus" command, and that is what's killing my machine (I believe). So I simply delete this script.
6. When the package installation completes, the Configuration stage starts.
7. The setup runs some commands to setup the font directories, and then moves onto the setup for the modem (the USB bootdisk stage was skipped).
8. Installation then completes with no other problems.

I don't know why, but the rescan-scsi-bus command will always hang my system (ever since the 2.6.21 kernel.) I usually have to pass the -noscanluns command to the kernel (or remove the execute permissions on the rc.scanluns file).

Unable to boot Slackware 12 DVD

On booting a newly downloaded DVD of Slackware version 12, I get an error message: "unknown keyboard in config file" also
"Could not find kernel image"
Following the advise in the file "Slackware-HowTo" I entered "hugesmp.s" the default kernel name at the boot prompt.
Another error message"could not find kernel image".
Again following the instructions in the "HowTo" file, I entered "Huge.s" at the boot prompt. Again the same error message as above.

Hence I am unable to boot this DVD.

I downloaded this iso DVD from the Norway mirror site.
I am Using a Dell Inspiron 6000, new 8 months ago, with a 1 GB of Ram.

I am A newbie, that to date has been using Mepis Linux 6.5 on this computer successfully for about 4 months. I was intrigued by Slackware and was hoping to see if it was better than Mepis and was intending to install it in a prepared partition separate from the Mepis setup.

Some advise please.

So when you type on your enter key you get the message unknown keyboard and could not find kernel image. Perhaps you have a bad burn on the DVD or the DVD image is corrupt?
Did you check your md5 sum on the image? Maybe you could try to see if the DVD boots on another computer. If the DVD boots without errors on a different unit then you know you have a hardware issue on your Dell.

Slack 12.0 Install Hangs During Setup For USB Boot Disk

As the DVD took me the best part of 3 hours to download, I was impatient to try it out. I did not do the checksum, perhaps you are right. In a couple of days time I will be able to try your other suggestion of trying the DVD on another computer. I hope it works as the 3 hour download is not relished.

Thanks for your prompt help & advise.

Regards

If the image is corrupt, you needn't necessarily redownload the whole thing. Just start a torrent download of it, stop the download, copy the existing file into the torrent download location. Then restart the torrent download, and it should check for corrupt chunks and re-download those for you.

Thanks for the advise. I'll try your suggestion. Previously I have been a bit reluctant to use Torrent as I have got tied up in knots with the system when using Windows XP. However, I'll have a go as I haven't tried it in Linux. Thank you again
