about your drive

It suggests modprobe sg
also see if it is in /proc/scsi/scsi

yes it could be /dev/sdd or sdc

I must say I have never used a sata cdrom so I am a bit in the dark

Alternatively
(no flame please, but I would suggest you try another distro as well
to see if that cd can be seen straight away, say Mandriva, or suse,
or whatever, even a live Knoppix cd, then come back to slack once
you found out what was needed to make the cd work)

Not in /proc/scsi/scsi (my raid controller *XP* and two SATA's are though)

modprobe sg

"modprobe: Can't open dependencies file /lib/modules/2.6.13/modules.dep (No such file or directory)"

ls /lib/modules returns
2.4.31

**REMINDER, I am using test26.s kernel because slackware.com says it is capable of supporting SATA**
To my knowledge, 2.4.31 is not able to correctly detect SATA CD drives, do I need to get a copy of the 2.6.13 dependencies?

I had the same problem and I install slackware from ISO`s images and when the instalation finish the cdrom work perfectly whit me the device is /dev/scd0
to mount an iso image the sintaxis is
mount -o loop nameisoimage.iso /namedirectory
and in the instalation select pre-mount directory and write /namedirectory
