Random freezing
 

I have been trying to install slackware 9.1 for 2 days. I have tried cd install and hardrive install (Just to make sure it wasnt just my iso's or disc's). So far the problem has been the same every time, the install just randomly freezes once its start installing packages, for example, one time i got toi installing bash and it froze another time i got to the dev package and it froze. Not only that i was running vector recently (Vector is based off of slack), and it randomly froze during install, but eventually i got it on and it still froze while i was running, usually when installing/uninstalling packages.
Someone said i should try disabling apm and acpi, but i dont ho to disable these before the install :newbie: . I have a compaq armada 100s laptop with an amd k6 3 550mh proccessor and 128m of ram. Any ideas?

I think that the command that starts apmd and acpid are in the /etc/rc.d/rc.M. But if the PC hangs during the install, I would think that is might be a hardware problem. Do you have another OS on it? Does it run alright with that OS? Sounds to me like a heat problem.

Yeah i have windows 98 running too, but ive never had a problem with it. Ive also had red hat and never had a problem with it. It seems to only be slackware or slackware based distros, but i think you might be right about the heat thing. The only thing wrong with the heat idea is the fact that all other distro's and distro installs run fine on my laptop.

Ok, i tested zipslack to see if it was maybe a heat problem and have found that it most likel is. In zipslack i tried to install a few big packages and it locked up. Then i shut off the comp and tried to boot up zipslack again and it froze half way through the boot. This was all when the processor started to get hot. My only question(s) now is why this happens ONLY in slackware and slackware based distros and not in anything else (Windows, Redhat, Mandrake etc...), and is there anyway to fix it?

My guess is that it is not turning on you fan. I really do know how to fix this, since I do not have a laptop to try it out on. You might want to check the bios settings and see if there is a way to keep the fan running.

I've been in the same boat for ages, trying desperatly to get slackware installed on my compaq armada 100s. i decided to follow the overheat theory, i looked around the bios {F10 at startup} for a fan control but i didn't find anything so i went a found myself just a regular fan running off batteries, i placed my laptop on a gardening tray, because of the holes at the bottom for the cold refreshing air to reach my laptop and cool it down. This worked :D:D. So basically, it's just a problem with the slackware installer... it doesn't seem to keep the fan on... so u just need to temporarily use an outside fan just during the install.
