NVIDIA mcp79 (GeForce 8200mg) video card incompatible with startx ?

Hi there,

I have an Asus laptop, 320 gig hard drive, with 2 Primary partitions and 5 Extended partitions with a Duo T6400 CPU.

Slackware 14.1 is currently installed on /dev/sda5 /media/sda5. With windoze and Pclos installed on the remaining partitions. All installations are satisfactory and working fine, except Slackware which balks at startx.

When run, some text appears and disappears as quickly as it appeared, leaving a panel at times, always locking up, and the power switch is then needed to turn off the machine.

Slackware has been fully updated. I have added a user and tried startx in root and home. I use Grub legacy for booting with.

I have read various posts on this problem but lack the knowledge to fully grasp what is being said, or is it the solution to my problem?

I have visited the NVIDIA web site and downloaded and installed drivers as per one post, to no avail.

After much reading I am hoping someone will have the answer to my problem.

Thank you,

sevenjen

Which version of the nvidia driver have you installed? (version 340.76)

What says /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Hi there and thank you,

Sorry to say I did not keep a record of what driver I installed. It seemed a good idea at the time to follow the post, and install the driver. There were no error messages during the process.

I have tried to send my /var/log/Xorg.0.log? but it is too big to send and needs reducing in size.
What part of the log is needed, please?

Hi,

Confession time.

My original /var/log/Xorg.0.log has vanished on me. I cannot always guarantee outcomes when I try things. I made a copy of /var/log/Xorg.0.log old, booted that, which failed.

The following lines from that log seem to be what you are after. Written more in hope then anything else.

Smile Solved

Hello once more,

After looking into the matter more fully I found that NVIDIA-Linux-x86-
304.108.run. downloaded from the NVIDIA web site was the driver I needed.
After printing off the directions for installation all went well.

I am now busy looking into the next task of my Slackware education.

Cheers

sevenjen
