I did a fresh Slackware 14.2 install, with setup, made a fresh USB boot disk in the process, skipped the Lilo install, powered off, powered on with the boot stick installed and the media disk removed, logged in as root, issued pkgtool command, selected and ran the option to run install scripts again, "installed" Elilo and agreed to have the boot options menu thing, powered off, and now my Slackware machine boots without a stick, and does it even faster. And it is made by hp by the way.
Now to update the kernel...

For completed my previous post you have follow, I have already tested that the elilo menu in the first install appears only if the DVD or USB stick installation media is booted in UEFI mode which is not always the case.
So the second time with the boot stick you created, it is more likely to work.

Now that I have partitioned, formatted and installed correctly, I am happy to report my machine no longer freezes or drops USB devices. It has run all week without a hiccup.
Also happy to report a new development this week. I have been using a linux OS off and on since 2010, and before that, worked with UNIX machines for a number of years but always have depended on IT guys to do everything for me except write a few scripts to run analysis jobs and store results. So now that I am on my own (except for you guys, but now I don't have anyone doing things FOR me), I run into snags and breakdowns left and right, and when I do, I don't know what to do but search the web for key words and phrases I am unfamiliar with, trying to get a clue from someone else, and ultimately, specific instructions, for fixing the problem. I do this in a completely mystified state, expecting nothing I do, especially of my own cleverness, will ever work. But this week, for the very first time, I find myself becoming familiar with commands and tools and locations and terms, and I HAVE A COUPLE OF TIMES HAD QUESTIONS OR BREAKDOWNS BUT THEN HAD ACTUAL IDEAS FROM MY OWN BRAIN ABOUT WHAT MIGHT WORK, AND WITHOUT EVEN GOING TO THE FORUMS HAVE HAD THESE IDEAS ACTUALLY WORK!!!!!
So thank you all for your help, encouragement and admirable patience. I now have a slackware system that is running right, and everything upgraded, that I know of, and I am a happy camper. I do still have some packages to install again, and a build script to write, but I am well on my way.
I started a thread in Linux Desktops already, but in my elilo.conf, it says 'chooser=simple.' Is there an alternative, such as 'verbose,' or say 'fancy'? Just wondering if anyone knows....I see a lot of people out there with 'chooser=simple' in their thing, and that's all I see.
